Dravyaguna is an integral part of Ayurveda, which deals comprehensively about rasa, guna virya, vipaka and prabhava (pharmacokinetics and pharmcodynamics) of herbs. Branch also deals with identification, collection, storage, and preservation of raw materials of plant origin.
VISION
To develop research methodology for understanding of principles of Ayurvedic Pharmacology & Materia Medica balancing Classical & Contemporary knowledge.
MISSION
The Department of Dravyaguna intends to achieve academic excellence and promoting development of scientific temper for Ayurvedic Herbal Research.
Dravyaguna department was established in the year 1933. In the year 2000 PG Course was started (4 scholars per year). PG Certificate Course in Reverse Pharmacology was started in the year 2013. Faculty is at its best and skilled.
Department has very well established laboratory, herbal garden spread across 22 acres (400 species of plants) which is also strengthened by Central Research Facility (CRF). Department works with objectives to provide knowledge of fundamental principles of Dravyaguna, drug action as per Ayurveda and conventional system of medicine.
Department conducts Induction programme every year for Under-graduation and Post-graduation. Timely organizes workshop and hands on training in field of Plant identification (Basic botany), sampling techniques, pharmacognostic studies, herbarium preparation techniques.
Has collaborations with many esteemed institutes like RMRC-ICMR etc. Works in domains like ekamoolika prayoga, rasapanchaka, development of Ayurveda pathological animal models, survey studies, standardization of drug clinical studies and Pharmcovigiliance.
Department frequently has activities like field visits to nearby flora of Jamboti, Yellapur, Moodbidri, Bakkal and Vanamahotasava. Awareness programmes to students in college and general public of community preservation of flora and home remedy medicine are done regularly.
